Additional Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Information

Bringing a new level of versatility and capability to flash photography, the Speedlite 430EX II features a powerful flash (guide number of 141 ft./43m at ISO 100) with a fast recycling time in a compact, durable body. A one-touch quick-lock mechanism makes it easy to attach or detach the 430EX II from the camera and a metal foot has been added for strength and durability. Flash controls can now be set through the camera's LCD screen on compatible EOS Digital SLR cameras. The Speedlite 430EX II is also quieter, recycle time is 20 percent faster (as compared to the 430EX) and since it is compatible with Canon's wireless E-TTL, it can be used as an affordable "slave unit."

What Customers Say About Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash for Canon Digital SLR Cameras:

awesome equipment, eats up batteries real fast and no rechargeable pack available for it, but works good with regular rechargeable batteries.

Great product. Zero complaints. I have run it in both primary and slave mode mode without any problems.

Overall very pleased with this speedlite. Well integrated with my 5DMkII. Lacking some in power. Still experimenting with the advanced features.

My favorite feature is the White balance compensation. This is a very versatile flash. I have used it both in the studio and as fill light outdoors. It can destablise white balance in respective frames during continuous shooting. The only ( very small )issue I have with the flash is the weight but weight is just one of those things you deal with when using an external flash.

The large guide number is great, but I would never use the high-end studio features (master/slave) and other features that I would pay for, and the physical size of that flash is just too large for me. I may have to view a few macro photos to get the manual adjustment set right, but that's no big deal with a digital SLR. On the other hand, the 580EX II was more than I needed. I found the 270EX to have a too low a guide number for my use, to be short of features for my grade of camera, and to lack third party accessories such as STO-FEN. A few months ago, during Canon's last big rebate sale, I was reasearching the 270EX, 430EX II, and 580EX II Speedlites for my Canon 40D camera, but a higher priority came up and I was unable to make a purchase. There are good reasons why this is Canon's best selling flash. I am no longer looking at dedicated macro flashes such as ringlights; I just attach a Sto-Fen, manually reduce the power of the flash, tilt it, and shoot my macros. While I use it for general photography, I also enjoy taking macro photos with this flash.

The only thing I don't like about the flash is the buttons are small and flush with the back, they should stick out a little further so I don't have to use a fingernail to press them. So, that leaves the 430EX II. Now that Canon is having another big rebate sale, I decided to get a flash. The flash is pretty much foolproof in auto, I have to purposely mess up the camera or flash adjustments to get a poor photo, or be too far away. The 580EX II is more suitable for someone who has a studio, or earns his/her living from taking photos; not a hobbyist or enthusiast, in my opinion. It is the perfectly sized and featured flash for me. I would certainly recommend this flash to anyone wanting to step up from the weak pop-up flash of their camera, but not needing the high power, high features, and high price tag of a pro level flash. And the price is right during the rebate sale.
